The Story : A Rare Architectural Wonder

When we say “Metal Castle” (or Loha Prasat), it is a big deal in the Buddhist world. Historically, there were only three: in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangkok. Now, Chiang Mai proudly hosts the 4th one in the world and the very first in the Lanna Kingdom style

It looks like a castle from a fairy tale, doesn’t it? This is the world’s 4th Metal Castle, standing proudly right here in Hang Dong.

Located on the serene Doi Jom Jang hill, this temple (officially known as Wat Aranyawat) is a masterpiece that blends ancient Lanna craftsmanship with Tai Yai influences. The entire structure is white, symbolizing purity, crowned with metallic spires that gleam under the sun. It is not just a temple; it is a staircase to heaven that feels both sacred and incredibly modern.

Highlights & Must-See

Here are the things you cannot miss when you visit:

Take your time to walk around. The all-white stucco designs featuring mythical creatures are incredibly detailed. When the sunlight hits the white walls, it creates a stunning dimension of light and shadow. Also, don’t forget to pay respect to the Golden Pagoda inside, which houses Buddha relics.

The Vibe & General Info

Unlike the busy Doi Suthep, this place is peaceful. The only sound you might hear is the wind chimes and your own heartbeat.

Tourist riding a Red Truck Songthaew to Wat Phra That Sri Mueang Pong
Pro Tip: The road is steep! If you’re not a confident driver, do what I did—hire a local Red Truck. Safe and fun!

The journey is part of the destination. Driving up this winding road through the green tunnel feels like entering a different world.

If you are not a confident driver (especially on a scooter), please be careful. The safest and most fun option is to park below and hire a local Red Truck (Songthaew) service stationed at the entrance. It supports the locals and saves your brake pads!

Pro Tip from North Thai Life

Don’t rush back to the city! After descending from the temple, explore the Ban Pong village area below. It is a hidden paradise for cafe hoppers, filled with cute coffee shops nestled right next to the stream.
