Huai Tueng Thao Waterfall: The Secret Jungle Behind Chiang Mai’s Curtain – Only 15 Minutes Away!

You don’t need to drive for hours to find a “tropical rainforest.” Huai Tueng Thao offers an easy hiking trail perfect for beginners and families, featuring giant straw King Kongs just 15 minutes from the city

The Entrance: Small Change, Million-Dollar Views

Entrance gate of Huai Tueng Thao, Chiang Mai, where the maintenance fee is collected.
Start your journey here with a small fee for a big view!

Before diving into the green, there is a small maintenance fee of only 20 Baht per person. As soon as you pass the gate, the scenery shifts from concrete roads to a vast reservoir with Doi Suthep mountain as a backdrop. You will want to roll down your windows to breathe in that fresh mountain air.

The King Kong Meadow: A “Lion King” Vibe in Lanna

Don’t miss the “Giant Straw King Kongs” and their elephant friends standing tall amidst the rice paddies. It feels like a scene straight out of The Lion King. There are also floating bamboo restaurant huts where you can grab a local bite before the hike begins.

Huai Tueng Thao Checkpoint: Where Friendship Begins

Drive to the very end of the road to reach the “Huai Tueng Thao Checkpoint,” our trailhead. The moment you kill the engine, the rhythmic sound of the stream will greet you immediately. Here, you will meet fellow explorers from around the world, all sharing smiles and getting ready for the 2.5km trek together.

Hiking 101: Bamboo Tunnels & “The Fallen Giant”

The trail is very easy—mostly flat with slight inclines. The highlight is the “Bamboo Tunnel,” where sunlight filters through beautifully. You might encounter a “fallen tree” across the path, but it’s just a fun little challenge that makes your first hike feel like a real adventure!

The Reward: Huai Tueng Thao Waterfall

After a chill walk listening to the birds and the stream, you’ll reach the waterfall! The cool mist will instantly refresh you. This trail is perfect for seniors, children, and anyone looking for a stress-free nature walk.

Know Before You Go (Pro-Hiker Checklist)

To ensure your first jungle trek ends with a smile rather than a struggle, here’s my local advice

Bug Spray: Since it is a lush forest temple, the mosquitoes are “friendly.” Bring insect repellent to keep them at bay!

Footwear: I highly recommend sneakers or hiking shoes with a good grip. Please avoid flip-flops, as the trail can be slippery and might lead to a sprained ankle.

Hiking Pole: This is optional, but having one (even a sturdy stick) makes balancing and crossing fallen logs much easier!

Hydration: One small bottle of water is usually enough for the 5km round trip.

Small Towel: Great for wiping off sweat—the jungle humidity can be a bit intense!
